Activities to improve communication skills in children

Table of Contents

Having good communications skills becomes essential for every individual to grow up and step into the bigger world.

Unfortunately, since many parents ignore this aspect of their children's growth, they find it challenging to acquire these skills as they grow up.

But children can be taught effective communications skills with the help of everyday activities that require minimum effort.

Six activities that can help you nurture the communication skills of your children are:

    1. Interact with your kids: Take out some time and talk to your kids more often. Kids usually have a habit of imitating their parents. Your ultimate goal should be to make your kids feel comfortable to start and continue conversations with you. Talk to your children about some topics and ask them some questions, observe how they respond, and try to improve their skills if you feel the need.
    2. Discuss their routine: Ask your kids how they spent their day or encourage them to share something about their friends. The more you will talk to them, the more open they will be to communicate, and these are the years where they need to learn communication skills as this will be required throughout their life.
    3. Identify your child's interest: Whenever you talk to your kids, remember to stick mainly to the topics children are interested in. This will be helpful for them to be open to express their thoughts with you more easily.
    4. Observe carefully: Remember, to pay attention when your kids are speaking. You need to observe how their communication is going on. Notice their pronunciations, their grammar. Stop and correct them as soon as you find any mistake.
    5. Promote Storytelling: Make story-telling a daily habit between you and your children. Share some realistic as well as imaginative stories with them. Sometimes, leave them with incomplete stories and ask them to complete in their way.
    6. Teach about Body Langauge: Body gestures play a significant role in communication. Teach your kids how to maintain good body language. Teach them about body gestures and what they mean. The ability to communicate effectively is a key skill for kids. Start teaching your kids about this skill in their primary age itself.
