6 powerful openings to hook your audience

Table of Contents

All your life, you must have heard that the first impression is the last impression. You've listened to this often because it is true. The audience is quick in forming their judgment, so you should pay attention to your speech or presentation opening. If you can make the audience like you in the starting, you'll be able to grab their attention for an extended period. An impactful opening makes it easier to convince the audience and make them understand your point.

Six ways in which you can hook your audience from the beginning are -

    1. Question the audience: At the beginning of your speech, ask the audience some questions to ponder over. They can be basic questions like "Have you ever....", "When was the last time....", "What is that one thing that......". The purpose is to stimulate your audience's thoughts and make them involved. The questions up forwards must necessarily be relevant to your content as well, or otherwise, they will sound redundant and unnecessary.
    2. Share some interesting facts: While the speech is going on, try to share few interesting facts. When you do share some in between, it keeps the audience engaged. When they feel related to the facts and incidents, it increases their focus throughout the duration.
    3. Use bold statements in your speeches: Whenever you prepare a speech to speak in public, do not forget to add a bold comment. A bold statement means, tell your audience that you are about to provide something highly important or valuable in few minutes, for example- " I will share three powerful techniques within next 60 minutes, that can surely change your life.".
    4. Stories play an important role: In any speech to the audience, stories play an important role. Share your stories with your audience as "A few years ago my company was in some major crisis. That's when I learned a lesson.....". When you share a real-life story or an incident with the audience, they feel personally connected with the speaker and their incident. And when people can relate, it leaves a vast impact on their hearts and souls.
    5. Make your audience reflect: Reflection is one of the most important aspects to keep your audience hooked throughout your speech. If you make sure that the content of your presentation compels your audience to reflect on it, you are surely going to leave a better impact on their minds.
    6. Use quotes more often: Using quotes more often in your speeches is the best way to keep your audience hooked from the beginning. By using quotes, the credibility of the speaker increases in the mind of the audience, and quotes are always the best way of saying your things more easily.
