5 ways to avoid jargon from your language

Table of Contents

Jargon is a term used to describe a language or way of writing/reading where unnecessary use of vocabulary is evident. The motive behind writing in jargon is to impress or present, thereby ignoring the informative aspect of communication.

Technical Writing: Avoiding jargon doesn't mean the writer has to write informally or leave all technical terms behind. On the contrary, the main reason why it becomes essential for senders to avoid jargon is to make articles readable, informative and precise.

    How Can One Avoid Jargon:

Besides hindering a smooth flow of communication, jargon can also stretch subject-related or domain-related barriers in senders and receivers during the communication. Thus, avoiding it becomes a necessity here.

Here are a few tricks that might help you in reducing jargon in your content:

    1. Enter into the shoes of your receiver. Think like them, keep their domain and expertise in mind and write according to the vocabulary you both will understand.
    2. Take help from a friend who is not in your field or business. Make them read your article and take feedback about what turned out to be easily understandable or otherwise in the article.
    3. Start adding more global words and terms in your vocabulary that look professional and are easy to understand for people of all stages.
    4. Readout your article to check for any less-important terms used in the report.

    5. Skimming can be an excellent way to avoid complex word usage. If the article seems comprehensible by first glance or skimming, there are fewer unnecessary jargon chances.

Using highly technical terms related to the domain in every sentence for no valid reasons might make the reader wrong.

In various fields like engineering and law, jargon is a common problem to face. Although, it can be removed by increasing reading and listening skills.
